A beadle was a church officer in Britain in earlier times. He helped the priest in practical ways, and one big job was keeping order: quieting people, showing them where to sit, walking in front in a service, sometimes carrying a staff as a sign of the job. You are not likely to meet a beadle in a church today; the word lives on in history, old stories, and a few old institutions. Though actually the same kind of title was also used for parish officers outside the church — the man who carried out small public duties in a town — so in older books a “beadle” is not always standing in a pew. It sounds formal and British, and a little dusty.
組成From older English bydel, a kind of officer or herald. Built like bid (to command or call out) + a person-suffix -le: the one who carries orders. Same old family as Dutch beul and German Büttel.
