1. 1

In war, a beachhead is a strip of shore that soldiers have taken from the enemy after landing from the sea. It is small at first. The army holds it, brings in more people and supplies, and then tries to push inland. News and history books use the word for those landings. People also stretch it: a company that opens one small office in a new country may call that office a beachhead — a first foothold from which they hope to move further. The fighting sense is the home meaning; the business sense is a picture borrowed from it. It is fairly formal language, not playground talk.
