    A beachcomber is someone who walks the shore looking for what the sea has left: shells, driftwood, glass, useful scraps, sometimes wreckage. In a gentle sense it is a slow hobby — you comb the tide line the way you comb hair, catching what is there. In older Pacific stories, a beachcomber could also be a drifter who lived off the beach and passing ships, and the word then felt a little rough and unrooted. It is not a formal job title. The picture is always a person searching the sand, not a tool and not a wave — though comber by itself can mean a long curling wave, which is why the mix-up happens.
