Bawdiness is the quality of jokes, songs, or stories that talk about sex in a loud, funny, not-shy way. The point is laughter in a group, not a cold or cruel kind of dirt. You meet the word more in books, reviews, and talk about old plays than in the mouths of young people day to day. A critic might say a show has a lot of bawdiness; a teenager would more likely call the jokes dirty or raunchy. It feels a little old and a little British. Though actually the line is soft: what one table calls good fun, another calls too much — the word names a tone, not a fixed list of sentences.
