    If you call someone batty, you mean they are a little crazy — odd, scatter-brained, maybe talking to the cat — but you are not of them and you are not trying to be cruel. It is a soft, almost fond word, more British than American, and a bit old-fashioned; younger people more often say crazy or nuts. It comes from bat, the flying animal, and from the old joke that a mad person has “bats in the ” (bats flying wildly around in the church tower that is their head). Batshit is a much ruder, stronger cousin from the same idea. This is the “slightly crazy” word, not a hard insult.
