A bassoonist is someone who plays the bassoon — the person, not the long wooden instrument itself. They hold the bassoon upright and blow into a thin curved metal pipe with a double reed, making those low woodwind notes in an orchestra or a small group. The word is a job-name, like or violinist: ordinary, a little formal, and always about the musician. Though actually, lists sometimes paste the instrument’s meaning onto this word; English speakers do not mean the tube when they say bassoonist.
