A bassoon is a woodwind instrument: a very long wooden tube, folded so a person can hold it upright. It makes a low, warm sound — one of the lowest in the woodwind family. You blow into a thin curved metal pipe with a double reed (two thin pieces that together). It can sound serious, comic, or gentle, depending on the music.
