    A bassist is a musician who plays the bass. That may be the bass guitar — the long electric one with thick strings, common in pop, rock, and jazz — or the double bass, the huge wooden one that stands on the floor, common in orchestras and jazz. The word names the person, not the instrument. It is a plain, neutral word: fine on a poster, in a review, or in class. In bands, people often just say “bass” for the player (“Who’s on bass?”), but bassist is the clear job-name.
