A barrette is a small clip, usually metal or plastic, that holds a woman’s (or a girl’s) hair in place. You slide it in so a section of hair stays back, or so a style does not fall down. It is not a rubber band and not a hairpin you fold; it is the little bar that snaps or clasps shut. American English loves this word. In Britain people more often say hair clip or hair slide, though they will still understand barrette. Shops sell plain ones for school and fancy ones with bows or sparkles. You will hear it around dressing tables and , not in formal writing. There is a verb, to barrette hair, meaning to it with one of these, but almost nobody uses it; people just say she put a barrette in. Do not mix this up with a beret, the round soft hat: they sit next to each other in the dictionary and nowhere else.
