1. 1n/ˈbæntu/Bantu languages班圖語族

A large family of African languages spoken across central, eastern, and southern Africa. Swahili and Zulu are two of them.

    文法不可數名詞:通常不加 a/an,也不加 -s 來表示複數。

    這是一群語言的總稱。世界上沒有人在講一種叫 Bantu 的語言。大家講的是斯瓦希里語、祖魯語,還有好幾百種別的語言。學者發現它們造字的方式很像,就把它們歸成一家。這個用法是不可數的。所以不會說 a Bantu 或 two Bantus 來指語言。實際句子裡,它多半放在名詞前面。最常見的寫法是 Bantu languages 或 a Bantu language。

    示範例句 · Example

Swahili is the most widely spoken Bantu language.

    中文翻譯斯瓦希里語是被最廣泛使用的班圖語言。

This is a group name, not the name of one language. Nobody speaks a language called Bantu; people speak Swahili, Zulu, Shona, and hundreds of others that scholars put in the same family because they build words in similar ways. The word is uncountable in this use, so you do not say a Bantu or two Bantus about languages. In practice you will see it most often in front of another noun: Bantu languages, a Bantu language, Bantu speakers.

  2. 2n/ˈbæntu/Bantu-speaking person說班圖語的人

A person from central, eastern, or southern Africa who speaks one of the Bantu languages. Some people find this name offensive when it is used for a person.

    文法可數名詞:前面可以加 a/an,要表示複數時常常加 -s。

    這個用法是在指人,而且可數:a Bantu、two Bantus。問題就出在這裡。原本是替一群語言取的名字,被拿來稱呼人。它用一個字蓋過好幾百個不同的族群,好像他們是同一群。有些人覺得這樣稱呼他們是冒犯。所以自己寫的時候,比較安全的做法是寫出實際的族群名字。或者說 Bantu speakers、a speaker of a Bantu language。那是在講一個人會什麼,而不是替他貼身分標籤。舊書和舊的官方文件裡,還是常常會看到這個用法。

In this use the word names people, and it is countable: a Bantu, two Bantus. That is where the trouble sits. A name built for a language family gets put on human beings, and it covers hundreds of separate groups with one word, as if they were one. Some people find that offensive. So the safe move when you are writing is to name the actual group, or to say Bantu speakers or a speaker of a Bantu language, which describes what someone does rather than labelling who they are. You will still meet this use in older books and old official papers.
