    Bang-up means very good. A bang-up job is work done really well; a bang-up time is a lovely time. It is friendly American English, and it sounds a bit old now — the kind of praise you might hear from an older speaker. When it sits in front of a noun, it usually keeps the little line: bang-up. Though actually, British English has a verb bang up that is not praise at all. There it can mean to crash a car, or to lock someone in prison. Same two pieces, different life. So if you read bang up without the little line, look at the rest of the sentence before you smile.
