A bandstand is a small structure in a park, usually with a roof and a raised floor but no walls, where a band plays for people sitting on the grass. Old town parks loved them: often round or eight-sided, painted, with the musicians in the middle and the public all around. You can still find them, sometimes used for Sunday concerts, sometimes sitting empty. It is a place, not a piece of furniture. Though actually, students often picture the metal frame that holds sheet music on a chair — that is a music stand, a different thing entirely.
