A bandleader is the person who runs a band — especially a jazz band or a dance band. They keep time, choose the tunes, cue the other players, and often play an instrument themselves. In jazz the famous names are often bandleaders: the face of the group. Though actually, this is not the word for every kind of leader with musicians. A symphony has a conductor. A rock group more often has a frontman, or people just say “the singer.” is the cousin word for a military or brass band. Bandleader still fits anyone who runs a small popular band, but the classic picture is jazz, swing, and the dance hall.
