BAME is a short way of writing “Black, Asian, and Minority Ethnic.” It is used mainly in the United Kingdom, in government papers, news, and job forms, to talk about people who are not from the white British majority. You will almost never hear it in everyday talk in Taiwan. Though actually, even in Britain many people now dislike it. The tidy label hides a messy truth: it puts Black people, South Asian people, East Asian people, and many others into one basket, as if they were one group. Some British writers and campaigners have asked organisations to stop using it and to name the groups they mean instead. If you meet it, it is a UK official-style label, not a kind word for describing a friend.
