- 1n/ˈeɪʒən/Asian person (UK: South Asia first)亞洲人〔英式〕
A person who comes from Asia, or whose family came from Asia. In British English this usually points first to someone with roots in South Asia, for example India, Pakistan or Bangladesh.
Example
Asians have run shops on this street for over fifty years.
中文翻譯亞洲人在這條街上開店超過五十年了。
This is the people-use of the word, read by a British ear. The grammar is the same as the American noun entry: it is countable, and the plural is Asians. The difference is the first picture. In Britain the picture usually starts in South Asia. The same lean is recorded in South Africa, Kenya and Uganda, where Asians has long meant families with South Asian roots. Because the first picture moves from country to country, the plural on its own can be read two ways in an international text. Writers who need to be exact usually name the region or the country instead.

- 2a/ˈeɪʒən/from Asia (UK: South Asia first)亞洲的〔英式〕
From Asia, or connected with Asia — its countries, people, languages, food, or culture. In British English, a listener usually pictures South Asia first, for example India or Pakistan.
這條跟美式那條是同一個字、同一個用法。字面意思沒有變,都是「跟亞洲有關的」。會變的是聽的人。在英國,Asian shop、Asian food、Asian music 這些說法,多半先讓人想到南亞。像印度、巴基斯坦、孟加拉一帶。所以同一句英文,在倫敦和在洛杉磯,讀者腦中浮出的畫面會不一樣。寫東西時如果要精準,直接講國名就好。像 Japanese noodles、Thai curry、Korean drama。這條一樣開頭大寫,一樣沒有比較級。
This is the same word doing the same job as the American entry, and the literal meaning does not change: it says something comes from Asia. What changes is the listener. In Britain, Asian shop, Asian food or Asian music usually makes people think first of South Asia — India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and their neighbours. So the same three words can land differently in London and in Los Angeles, and that is worth knowing before you use them in writing. If you need to be exact, name the place instead: Japanese noodles, Thai curry, Korean drama. Like the other adjective entry, it keeps its capital A and has no comparative form.

- 3n/ˈeɪʒən/Asian person (US: East/Southeast Asia first)亞洲人
A person who comes from Asia, or whose family came from Asia. In American English this usually points first to someone with roots in East or Southeast Asia, such as Japan, China, Korea or Vietnam, and is sometimes used of South Asia as well.
像 Asian students、Asian families。兩種說法都很常見。
Here the same label moves from things to people. Asian food means the food comes from Asia; an Asian means the person, or the person's family, came from there. The word is countable, and the plural is Asians. It stays general on purpose: it tells you the part of the world, not the country. Which part a listener pictures depends on where they are. In the United States, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, the first picture is usually East or Southeast Asia, and sometimes South Asia too. In Britain the first picture is usually South Asia, and that use has its own entry here. In everyday speech you will very often hear the adjective with a noun instead — Asian students, Asian families, Asian friends. Both patterns are common.

- 4a/ˈeɪʒən/from Asia (US: East/Southeast Asia first)亞洲的
From Asia, or connected with Asia — its countries, people, languages, food, or culture. In American English, a listener usually pictures East and Southeast Asia first, for example Japan, China, or Korea.
Asian 指「來自亞洲、跟亞洲有關的」。用法是放在名詞前面。像 Asian food、Asian art、Asian countries。
Asian points at one place on the map and says: this comes from there. You put it in front of a noun — Asian food, Asian art, Asian countries, Asian students. Asia is huge, so the word stays general. It never names one single country. What it does carry is a first picture in the listener's mind. That first picture is not the same everywhere. In American English it usually starts in East and Southeast Asia — Japan, China, Korea, Vietnam and their neighbours. So an American who reads Asian restaurant often expects food from that side of the map. British English leans the other way, toward South Asia, and that use is written up in its own entry here. The word keeps its capital A, because it is built on the place name Asia. It has no comparative form: people do not say more Asian to mean more from Asia.

- We call upon you to be ready to take over from the non-citizens who are leaving the country. As you are aware, I, on Wednesday the 9th August, 1972, signed a Decree revoking with effect from that date, all entry permits and certificates of residence which had been granted to British citizens of Asian origin and the nationals of India, Pakistan and Bangla Desh. They were, however, permitted to stay in Uganda for a period of 90 days from that day [...]
- It is not true that Asians were inadaptable in East Africa. Nearly all Indian men learned to speak English, and, by the second generation, both sexes had become fluently Anglophone, while continuing to use their native tongue (mostly Gujarati, Cutchi, Punjabi or Hindustani). Most Indians also learned the upland Swahili pidgin which is the trade language of East Africa; while few spoke the “correct” coastal Swahili, their fluency in “kitchen Swahili” was often superior to that of the Europeans. The more rural Indian shopkeepers did indeed become somewhat Africanized, while the urban Indian became more Anglicized.
