If you call someone ballsy, you mean they are brave and determined, and they go ahead even when other people may not like it. It is informal, a little rude (from balls meaning courage), and more American than British. It can sound — “that was a ballsy move” — but it is not a word for a formal essay. Though actually, some people find it too body-based and would rather say bold or gutsy. You would not use it of a quiet, careful plan; it is for the kind of bravery that risks looking foolish.
