The ball in ballroom is not the round ball. It is a separate word that entered English in the 1630s from French baller 'to dance', through Late Latin ballare and Greek ballizein. So a ballroom is literally a dancing room, and it has no historical link to ball meaning a sphere, which came from Germanic roots around 1200.
ballroom 裡的 ball 不是圓球的那個 ball。它是另一個字，1630 年代從法文 baller（跳舞）進入英文，再往上是晚期拉丁文 ballare 和希臘文 ballizein。所以 ballroom 字面就是「跳舞的房間」，跟表示球體的 ball（約 1200 年來自日耳曼語系）在歷史上並沒有關係。
