A balloonist is someone who flies a balloon, usually a hot-air balloon. They may do it for sport, for festivals, or as a job taking passengers up. The ending -ist names the person, the way it does in or artist. The word is a little specialist, and a little old-fashioned in everyday talk. Many people now say balloon pilot, or just “the person flying the balloon.” You will still see balloonist in news about and big public flights. It does not mean someone who makes party balloons, sells balloons, or twists them into animals. Those people have other names. The balloonist is the one in the basket, in charge of the fire and the landing.
