Ballooning is the sport of flying in a balloon — almost always a hot-air balloon, a huge bag of heated air with a basket hanging under it. People go up for the quiet, the view, and the feeling of drifting with the wind. The pilot cannot steer like a plane. They change height to find a helpful wind, and they go mostly where the air takes them. It is a hobby, a tourist ride, and sometimes a race; it is not only a serious competition. In Taiwan many people know the picture from festivals with many balloons in the sky. The word simply names the activity. Though actually, English also uses ballooning for things that swell or grow fast — “prices are ballooning” — from the shape of a balloon filling up. That is a different picture. This word, here, is the flying.
