Ballistics is the scientific study of how objects move when they are thrown or through the air — a stone, an arrow, a bullet from a gun. It asks how fast the object leaves, what path it takes, how it spins, and where it falls. The army, the police, and people who make guns care about this. In crime work, a ballistics test can help match a bullet to a gun. The word is formal and technical. You will meet it in news about weapons and in detective stories. It is the name of a subject, like physics, which is why it ends in -ics. A lab does a ballistics report. A person who shouts is not “doing ballistics.” That angry meaning lives in go ballistic, a different use of the related adjective.
組成From ballista (the old throwing engine) + -ics (a field of study). You can also see it as ballistic + -s.
