In everyday English, ballistic is the anger word in the phrase go ballistic: to suddenly become very angry, as if you have exploded. A parent goes ballistic about a dent in the car. A supporter goes ballistic at a referee. It is informal. You would not put it in a polite letter or a careful report. You almost always need that verb go; people do not usually say “he was ballistic” the way they say “he was angry.” Though actually, the older meaning is still very much alive: ballistic describes objects that are or thrown through the air, especially a weapon that flies a set path after it is launched — a ballistic missile. The anger meaning borrows that picture of something shooting off. A few people also say go ballistic for wild excitement, but anger is the usual reading. The word does not come from the round ball you play with, and it has nothing to do with ballet.
