A backrest is the part of a chair, sofa, or car seat that your back leans on. It holds you up so you do not have to sit with a tired, unsupported back. Some backrests are high, some are only a small pad, some fold down so you can lie back a little. It is a plain, physical word — furniture shops, car , assembly instructions. “Rest” here is a support, a place for the back to rest against, not sleep. You would not call a whole a backrest; the backrest is just that one part.
