A backhoe is a large digging machine. It has a long arm with a bucket, and the bucket scoops toward the machine — the same motion as a garden pulling soil back toward your feet. That is the whole name: a that works backwards. Builders use it to cut trenches, open the ground for and roads, and move earth around a site. The machine you often see is a tractor-like body with a shovel in front for pushing dirt and the digging arm at the back; people on site just call the whole thing a backhoe. A bigger cousin sits on tracks and can spin all the way round; that is usually called an excavator, though in loose talk the two get mixed. The word can be a verb too: to backhoe a hole is to dig it with this machine. It is everyday building-site English, not a fancy or technical-only word — though the sales will still say “backhoe loader” when they want to sound precise.
