In basketball, the backboard is the big flat board that stands behind the basket — the ring and the net. The ball may hit this board and then drop in; players practise that on purpose and call it a bank shot. In a the board is often wood or hard plastic; in a big indoor game it is usually thick glass, so you can see through it. People say backboard for that upright board, not for the hoop itself, though actually someone pointing at the whole set-up may still use the word loosely. You will hear it in basketball far more than anywhere else.
