A backbencher is an ordinary British Member of Parliament who does not have an important official position — not a minister, not a shadow minister. They sit on the benches further back in the House of Commons. UK news uses the word every day. A backbencher can still ask sharp questions and vote against their own party; the name is about rank, not about staying quiet. Though actually, some well-known politicians spend years as backbenchers, and some choose to stay there after a top job ends.
