A babycino is a small cup of hot milk with a thick cap of bubbles, sold in coffee shops for young children. It is made to look like a grown-up cappuccino — white cup, foamy top, sometimes cocoa powder or a few chocolate sprinkles — but there is usually no coffee in it at all. That is the whole joke and the whole kindness: the child gets their own coffee without caffeine. You hear the word a lot in Britain, Australia, and New Zealand; American shops more often just say steamed milk. It is a warm, slightly playful café word, not something you would write in a formal essay. Though actually, a few places do add a drop of coffee, so if the child is very small it is worth asking. Some menus spell it babyccino, with two c's; still the same drink.
