"Axes" has two different meanings depending on which word it comes from. It can be the plural of "axe," the tool with a sharp blade used for cutting wood — "two axes." It can also be the plural of "axis," an imaginary line something turns around, or the lines on a graph — the x-axis and y-axis together are called "the axes" of the graph. Both are spelled the same in the plural but sound slightly different.
