Something awe-inspiring is so grand, , or powerful that it makes you feel a deep mix of respect and wonder — the feeling called awe. A mountain, a cathedral, a performance, or even a person’s calm under pressure can be awe-inspiring. The word is strongly positive and still fairly serious. Though actually, “awe” used to carry more fear than it does now, so an awe-inspiring storm can still have a trace of that older, slightly greatness, not just “wow, nice.” It is more serious than “cool,” and it has not slid as far as “awesome,” which young speakers often use for anything they like.
