Avuncular describes a way of behaving: kind, warm, and a little protective toward someone younger, the way a friendly uncle might be. A teacher, a neighbour, or a television host can be avuncular — you do not have to be anyone’s real uncle. The word is formal and slightly humorous; people use it in writing more than in chat. Though actually, it can sometimes hint that the kindness comes with a bit of talking down, as if the older person enjoys being the wise one. It almost always describes a man. English does not really have a common sister-word for “like a kind aunt,” which tells you something about how the language grew.
