If someone is an avowed supporter, enemy, or believer, they have said so themselves, in public. Here the word is an adjective. It often sits in front of a role or a belief: an avowed atheist, an avowed socialist, an avowed fan. The point is not that other people guessed it — the person has owned it. Though actually, writers sometimes use it with a raised , as if the person is almost too proud of the label. It can also be the ordinary past form of the verb (“she avowed that…”), but the interesting use for is this “openly declared” sense.
