An automaker is a company that makes cars — used especially in newspapers, above all American ones. Headlines like “Japanese automaker” save space; in ordinary British English, car maker or car manufacturer sounds more natural. It covers the big firms that design and build cars (and often vans or trucks), not a small garage that only repairs them. Auto here is the short newspaper word for automobile, not the “self” auto in autobiography.
