    An autodialler is a machine that rings people’s telephone numbers by itself and then plays a recorded advertisement — the kind of call you pick up, hear a sales voice that is not a real person, and hang up. Companies use them to push insurance, loans, or “you have won a prize”. The British spelling has two l’s (autodialler); American spelling often has one (autodialer). It is the machine, not a person. People hate these calls, and many countries now try to limit them, but they are still how a lot of cold selling works.
