Australasia is a name for a group of lands in the south Pacific: Australia, New Zealand, and Papua New Guinea, and often the islands near them. It is not the same as Australia, which is one country. It is also not quite the same as Oceania, a wider map word that can take in many more Pacific islands. You meet Australasia in geography, sport, and science (plants and animals of that region). Some people use it loosely for ‘Australia and New Zealand only’; careful writers include Papua New Guinea as well. The name was made in French in 1756 by Charles de Brosses, from Latin meaning ‘south of Asia.’
