1. 1

Aurangzeb (1618–1707) was a Mogul — today we usually write Mughal — emperor of northern India, and the last one whose rule still felt like a great empire. He took the throne in the mid-1600s and held a huge stretch of land, bigger than under the emperors before him. Some people remember him as a strong, hard-working ruler; some remember him as harsh about religion. Both memories are still alive, and historians do not tell one tidy story. Though actually he was not the last man to hold the title: weaker emperors came after him, but the empire slowly broke apart. Older English says Mogul; modern history books say Mughal. They are the same dynasty.
