    To augment something is to add to it so that it becomes larger, stronger, or more useful. A school might augment its budget with a gift. A writer might augment a story with new scenes. In medicine, a doctor may augment a treatment by adding another drug. The word feels more formal than increase or add to; you see it in reports, academic writing, and technical talk more than in kitchen conversation. A very common modern use is augmented reality: computer pictures laid over the real world through a phone or glasses. People also use an augment as a noun, meaning the extra bit itself, but the verb is the usual one.
