Audiovisual describes something that uses recorded sound and pictures together. A film clip, a slide show with a voice, a classroom video, a training recording — those are audiovisual materials. Schools and offices often it to AV: the AV room, AV equipment, an AV presentation. The word is an adjective (audiovisual aids, audiovisual media). It is a little formal; in casual talk people may just say video, or “sound and pictures.” It does not mean everything you can see or hear in the world around you. It points to media made for showing and playing. You will also see the audiovisual as audio-visual; both spellings are used. Though actually, in Taiwan schools the older Chinese label is often 視聽, even when younger people say 影音 in everyday talk.
組成From audio- + visual. Audio- is the hear-root (Latin audīre); visual is about what you see.
