If you are attuned to someone, you have become so familiar with how they think and behave that you can react in a fitting way. A parent becomes attuned to a baby’s cry; a good friend is attuned to your moods. You can also be attuned to a place, a market, or a small change in the air — meaning you notice it and adjust. The usual pattern is attuned to, often with finely or highly. Though actually, the older picture is musical: to attune was to bring instruments to the same pitch, and people still feel that ‘in tune with’ flavour even when nobody is singing. It can mean the state you are already in, or the state you have grown into.
