Doctors, scientists, and news writers like it because it does not slam the door: it says we can reasonably put this down to X, not X definitely did it. You will see deaths attributable to smoking, delays attributable to the weather. Though actually, people also stretch it to good news — success attributable to hard work — not only to blame. The pattern is attributable to, and it often follows is/was/are.
