One way to picture it: something is close enough that your hand can actually land on it — you can stretch out and touch it, so it is within reach.
attain comes via Old French ateindre from Latin attingere = ad- (to) + tangere (to touch) — literally “to touch on, reach”. The adjective keeps that hand-reaching-and-touching picture.
attain 經古法文 ateindre 來自拉丁文 attingere,由 ad-(朝向)+ tangere(觸碰)組成,字面就是「碰到、搆到」(tangere 也是 tangible 可觸摸的那個字根)。這條線很有用:它解釋了為什麼 attainable 天生帶著「距離」的味道——先有伸手的動作,才有搆不搆得到的問題。
Wiktionary / Online Etymology Dictionary: attain — from Old French ataindre, from Latin attingere (ad- “to” + tangere “to touch”).
