Atheism is the belief that God does not exist — or, when people speak more carefully, that there are no gods. It names the idea, not a person.
Atheism無神論 is the belief指的是這樣的信念——that God does not exist認為神並不存在,or, when people speak more carefully或者說得更精確一點,that there are no gods認為根本沒有神。It這個詞 names the idea指的是這個概念本身,not a person而不是指一個人。
In everyday English it can sound strong and final: not “I’m not sure” (that sits closer to ), but “I don’t believe there is a God.” Some people wear the word proudly; some use it quietly; some dislike it because it has been used as an insult. It belongs more to serious talk, philosophy, and news than to small talk.
In everyday English在日常英文裡 it can sound strong and final這個詞聽起來可能很強烈、很篤定:not "I'm not sure"不是「我不確定」 (that sits closer to agnostic)(那比較接近agnostic不可知論者),but "I don't believe there is a God."而是「我不相信有神」。Some people wear the word proudly有些人驕傲地用這個詞自稱;some use it quietly有些人低調地用;some dislike it because it has been used as an insult有些人不喜歡它,因為它曾被拿來當作侮辱的話。It這個詞 belongs more to serious talk, philosophy, and news比較常出現在嚴肅的討論、哲學和新聞裡,than to small talk而不是閒聊中。
Though actually, people use it loosely: someone who simply never goes to a temple or church is not automatically holding this belief — they may never have thought about it. And atheism is not the same as hating religion, even though arguments often glue those two together.
Though actually不過實際上,people use it loosely人們有時用得比較鬆散:someone who simply never goes to a temple or church一個單純不去廟裡或教堂的人 is not automatically holding this belief並不代表他就抱持這種信念——they may never have thought about it他們可能根本沒想過這個問題。And atheism而且無神論 is not the same as hating religion跟討厭宗教並不是同一回事,even though arguments often glue those two together儘管爭論中常把這兩者混為一談。
組成From 16th-century French athéisme, from athée (“atheist”), itself from Ancient Greek átheos “godless”: a- “without” + theós “god,” plus the French ending that English spells -ism (a belief or system). First English use is recorded in 1587.
