At-risk is how teachers, doctors, and social workers mark a group of people who need extra care because something bad is more likely to happen to them. The dictionary picture is often children in danger from violent parents, or people more likely to become ill — and that is still the heart of it. You will also hear at-risk youth, at-risk students, at-risk patients.

At-risk is how teachers, doctors, and social workers mark老師、醫生和社工會這樣標記 a group of people一群人:who need extra care這群人需要額外照顧,because因為 something bad壞事 is more likely更有可能 to happen to them發生在他們身上。 The dictionary picture字典裡給的畫面 is often常常是 in danger from violent parents受暴力父母威脅 children的孩子,or或 more likely to become ill比較容易生病 people的人——and that而那 is still仍然是 the heart of it這個字的核心。 You will also hear你也會聽到 at-risk youth高風險青少年、at-risk students高風險學生、at-risk patients高風險病人。

The matters in writing: at-risk children (one adjective, before the noun). After the verb, English usually drops it: those children are at risk.

in writing書寫時 The hyphen連字號 matters很重要:at-risk children(one adjective一個形容詞,before the noun放在名詞前面)。 After the verb在動詞後面,English英語 usually通常 drops it就把它去掉:those children are at risk。

Though actually, the tidy label can hide a messy truth. “At-risk” does not only mean “poor,” and it does not mean the harm has already happened. It means the chance is higher — of violence, of illness, of dropping out, of being hurt.

Though actually不過其實,the tidy label這個乾淨的標籤 can hide可能蓋住 a messy truth一個混亂的真相。 “At-risk” does not only mean不是只等於 “poor”「窮」,and it也 does not mean不表示 the harm傷害 has already happened已經發生。 It means它的意思是 the chance機會 is higher比較高——of violence遭遇暴力、of illness生病、of dropping out輟學、of being hurt受傷的機會。

Officials like the phrase because it is calm and careful. Students should know it can also sound like paperwork talking about people.
