Astrology is the study of the positions and movements of the stars and planets, and the idea that those patterns might influence people's character, lives, and events. In daily life, what most people meet first is the twelve star signs and the short notes in a newspaper or on a phone. That is a popular slice of a much older system that also uses the exact time and place of birth. Though actually, astrology and astronomy were not always two separate things. The Latin word astrologia could mean the study of the sky in general; later, careful watching of the sky (astronomy) was split from reading meaning in the sky (astrology). Many scientists today say astrology is not a science. Many other people still use it as a language for personality and timing. You do not have to take a side to use the word correctly.
組成astro- (star, from Greek astron) + -logy (study of, from Greek -logia). English took it from Middle French astrologie and Latin astrologia, which at first also covered what we now call astronomy.
