Assertiveness is the name for that skill: speaking and acting in a sure, clear way, so people notice what you think and what you need. Schools, offices, and counselling rooms use this word a lot — “assertiveness training” is a whole class where you practise saying no, asking for help, and not shrinking. It is not the same as being loud or pushy. Though actually, if someone has only ever seen shy or angry, they may call any clear “no” assertive when they really mean aggressive. Younger people might just say “speaking up” or “having a backbone.” The tidy picture is a balanced middle: not a doormat, not a bully. Real life is messier — some families say “assertive” as praise, and some as a complaint about a child who will not quietly agree.
