When you do something assertively, you speak or act in a clear, sure way, so other people can see what you want and that you mean it. You are not shouting, and you are not trying to win by force — though actually people mix this up with “aggressively” all the time. Teachers, bosses, and self-help books love this word: you ask for the seat, you say no to extra work, you tell a friend the plan has to change, and you do it looking them in the eye, without a long sorry. It is not rude if you stay kind; it is just not shy. In everyday talk many people would simply say “firmly” or “clearly.” Assertively sounds a bit more like a skill you , not a mood you woke up with.
