To assassinate someone is to murder them because they are important in public life — a leader, a politician, a well-known figure. It is a planned killing, not a street fight and not a crime of sudden anger. The word is serious and a little formal: and historians use it. You assassinate a person. Though actually, you will sometimes hear people joke that a critic “assassinated” a film or someone’s name; that is play. The real meaning is the murder of someone who matters in public.

組成assassin + -ate, after Middle French assassiner. The ending -ate turns the person-word into a verb: to do that kind of killing.
