An assassin is someone who murders an important person — a president, a king, a famous leader — usually after a plan, not in a sudden fight in the street. We reach for this word when the killing is about power, , or money paid for the death. News and history books use it; it feels serious. If the dead person is not a public figure, we normally say murderer or killer instead. Though actually, films and games have dressed the word up: a quiet figure in black who never misses. Real killings of this kind in history were often messy, , or quickly found out. There is an old verb “to assassin,” but almost nobody uses it now; we say . The noun is the word you will actually meet.

From French assassin or Italian assassino, from Arabic; the 'hashish users' reading is a folk etymology.
