1. 1

Aslant means not straight up and down, and not straight across, but at an angle. Light may fall aslant through a window; rain may come aslant; a board may be set aslant. It is an older, more story-book word than “at an angle” or “slanted.” You will meet it in writing more than in everyday talk. It is close to askew, but they are not the same: aslant is about the angle itself; askew is more “not in the proper straight place,” often as if something has slipped. The word comes from older English on slant — literally “on a slant.”
