Arrant is a heavy old word you drop in front of something bad to say it is that thing all the way through — not a bit of it, the whole of it. Arrant nonsense is not a small mistake; it is nonsense with nothing else mixed in. Arrant lie, arrant fool, arrant waste: those are the company it keeps. You almost never hear it with a kind noun, and you almost never hear it in the street. It belongs to books, to speeches that want to sound strong and a little old, and to jokes that copy that sound. Though actually it started life as the same word as , which meant wandering. The two spellings later split. kept the wandering sense. Arrant became a way to pile on the blame. If someone calls your idea arrant nonsense, they are not being careful. They are slamming it.

From Middle English, from Anglo-Norman / Old French errant, “wandering, travelling.” That French word sat on two Latin streams at once: one from iter, a road or journey, and one from errare, to wander or go wrong. In English the spellings then went different ways: errant kept “wandering”; arrant came to mean “complete, downright,” and almost only of something bad.
