Arran is an island in western Scotland, in the water called the of Clyde. People go for hills, walking, and quiet towns; the usual full name is the Isle of Arran. It is a place name, so it takes a capital letter. Though actually, history books also know another Arran far away in the — that is not this island. And Ireland's Aran Islands are a different place with a different spelling. When someone says they took the ferry to Arran, they almost always mean the Scottish one.

組成From Scottish Gaelic Arainn. The name is probably older still — maybe from a Pictish word for a high place. Scholars are not sure, and it may not come from the usual European word family.
