Arousal is the state of being switched on inside — heart, attention, body. The meaning people often hear first, and the one the word most easily suggests, is sexual: the body getting ready for sex. Doctors and psychology teachers also use it more widely for any move from quiet to alert (a loud noise, a scare, sudden interest). It is a formal, slightly clinical word. In casual talk about sex, people are more likely to say 'turned on' or 'excited'. Though actually, if you say 'arousal' about a football match or a school prize, many listeners will still hear a sexual note, so everyday 'excitement' is safer unless you mean the body-alert sense on purpose.
